Walk-A-Thon

Saturday April 24th, 2010
Daniel Boone High School, main track
9:00 am - 2:00 pm

How to Get Involved:

The purpose of this event is to raise money for the life-changing ministry of Appalachian Christian Camp (ACC). For 80 years ACC has been reaching out to the young people of our area with the message of Jesus Christ - making disciples, building character, training leaders - changing lives for eternity.  All of the money raised from this event will go to further this incredible ministry. Please consider becoming a Team Captain, a Walker, or a Sponsor of a Walker.

Team Captain:
As a team captain, we ask that you recruit at least nine other individuals to walk on your team, who will recruit sponsors for their own personal participation.

Walker:
As a walker, we ask that you seek at least 10 people who can pledge to give $10 or more to the camp in sponsorship of your participation. Also, we are allowing the walker to designate one of  three areas to fund at the camp with the money they personally raise - see below.

Sponsor:
As a sponsor, you will pledge to donate to Appalachian Christian Camp as sponsorship for the walker of your choice.

Walk-Day Supporter:
If you can't walk, whether you sponsor or not, come out and show your support. We'll have food and games all day long. Come cheer on all those walking to support ACC.

With each team member setting a minimum goal of raising $100, that's $1,000 minimum/team. It's easy to see what a tremendous blessing this can be for Appalachian Christian Camp!

Prizes

Team Prize: The team that raises the most money will win a free party at Splash Cove for your team and up to 150 of your closest friends. Check out Splash Cove now and imagine the kind of party you can have!

Individual Prize: The individual that raises the most money will win a weekend get-a-away (lodging paid for; location to be determined).

Where the Money Raised Will Be Going

As mentioned above, each walker is allowed to pick from one of the following three areas to which the money they raise will go:

Keeping the Cost of Summer Camp Low
The ACC staff and Board work very hard at keeping the cost of summer camp as low as possible. Currently the fees charged for camp represent only 1/2 of what it costs ACC to operate those camps. By selecting this option, the money raised will go a long way to help us keep offering camp at these low prices.

Camper Scholarship Fund
Even though we work hard to keep our prices low and only charge 1/2 of the actual costs, there are still many families that need financial assistance. The scholarship fund also helps send young people from organizations like: Mountain Mission School, Coalition for Kids, Family Links Respite Services, and others.  Donations to this fund will help send hundreds of children to camp this summer.

Debt Relief
It has been said that ACC has some of the best camp facilities around.  We have been blessed with the funds necessary to build and improve these facilities almost every time there is a need. However over the years, there have been times that we have had to make the difficult decision to take on debt, either to build or improve facilities, or buy needed land. Currently the camp carries $520,000 in long-term debt, which represents about $50,000 each year in the annual budget. Imagine how much more we could do each year if we paid this debt off!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How far are we walking?
We want you to walk as much as you want. Our goal is for your participation. It is for this reason we are not setting a distance. We just ask that you live up to whatever promise you make to your sponsors and that you have a great time! If you want to set a minimum, how about 8 laps? That's one lap for every decade that God has used ACC to change lives!

Am I getting pledges/mile or pledge/lap or just flat pledges for the day?
We encourage you to seek pledges for your participation for the day, not per any measure of distance. You are free to get pledges per lap if you feel that will be more effective.

Can I have more than 10 people on my team? Can I raise more than $100?
Absolutely! and Absolutely! We just wanted to set what we thought was a reasonable starting point. We don't want to limit you in any way. Go get 'em!.

What if I want to donate, but I don't know anyone walking?
Get in touch with Brett Forney at the camp (423-743-3910), and she'll assist you in finding the right walker to sponsor - it will most likely be a young person participating.

How do I sign up and get started as a Team Captain?
Get in touch with Brett Forney at the camp (423-743-3910) and let her know you're putting together a team. Then download and print as many pledge forms as you think you'll need, and start recruiting.

I can't be and don't know a Team Captain. Can I still get sponsors and walk?
Absolutely! You can download a pledge form, get your sponsors and show up. If you'd like to be placed on a team, let us know. Whether you participate alone or on a team, you'll still be eligible  for the individual prize.
